11-2-2009
We are excited to report that friends of the Functionality, StudioJonandNina - in collaboration with Ben Masterson-Smith - have just installed their winning entry for Tokyo Design Week 2009 Container competition.
Their great project blog shows the realisation of the project in full (and all the fun they have been having in Tokyo), but before you hyperlink there, here is some information from StudioJonandNina :
A green light emerges from clinical looking apparatus whilst effervescent algae jets though tubes around the dark space. A deck-chair sits lost amongst a field of thousands of swaying reeds, each one holding aloft a packet of dried seaweed.
The sound of heavy exhalations fills the space as visitors don the scattered facemasks, venting carbon dioxide into the pipe work and fuelling the reactor.
The Algae Room is our speculative reconfiguration of the home, one enabling the domestic growth of fuel; dissipating state fuel production to give individuals more control over the impact they make on the Earth.
We will be inviting visitors to the installation to take a seat and bask in the cool green glow of fermenting algae, chomp on some Nori and contribute a touch of CO2 to our bioreactor. We look forward to keeping you up to date with our progress, alongside this email please find below a link to our website and our winning competition entry attached.
Apologies for the late post.. but if you're in Tokyo, you should definately go and hunt them down.
